One of my poems won a contest
A poem I posted on Writting 4 All won a contest in April. I thought I'd share it with you.
The son a dear friend of my wife's family was found dead. He was in his middle fifties and was what most would think of as well off. He lived in East Texas and took care of his Mother( the family friend) who is in advanced stages of Alzheimer’s. I woke up this morning and wrote this poem.
"The Greater Loss"
By G W Pickle
I’m sorry who are you?
Yes officer, that’s me and you’re looking for who?
That’s my Son and he should be here
The kid is probably out playing, He’s really such a dear.
He’s usually here by now doing his chores.
And any minute he’ll come bursting through the doors
What’s wrong officer and why the frown?
You look troubled, why don’t you sit down.
Oh where is my son, He should be here by now.
He’s just a little late, so why the scowl.
You say some lady has been here for almost an hour or more
Waiting for him, Lord what on earth for?
No officer that can’t be right.
My son is a child not a man, don’t give me a fright.
You say he’s missing and can’t be found
And you have people here on the farm looking around.
Who’s that behind you and what did they say?
You need to make a call so they can take what away.
Now where’s my son, I need to know.
So many things for him to do, he surely can’t go.
I’m old and can’t hear so please speak up.
I’m tired of this game so please give it up.
Hello Doctor, why are you here.
I’ve not seen you in almost a year.
Please tell me what that is in your hand,
And inform me what is your plan?
Why is my arm hurting what did you do?
What is all this big to do?
All of a sudden I’m starting to confuse.
What’s this about some bad news?
You say you know why my son is late.
He was found dead a short distance from the front gate.
Oh dear God that can’t be true.
What am I going to do?
I’m just an old woman useless and poor.
And can’t do all the things I use to any more.
Why didn’t God take me instead of my son?
He was just a child, to young for his life to be done
I’m sorry who are you?
Yes officer, that’s me and you’re looking for who?
